Gillis Jones is a freelance photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. A native of Mobile, Alabama, where wildfires were uncommon amid other disasters, Jones experienced his first wildfire during his first visit to Yosemite National Park. It was during the Rim fire in 2011 that he first realized both the destruction and savage beauty of fire, and decided to use his skill as a photographer to create images that both informed those who could have loved ones in danger and capture the sinister imagery of the impact. Since last year he has captured the 10 largest wildfires in Northern California and Nevada, has provided tips and guidance to those seeking shelter from the danger, still photos to local news stations and publications, as well as had his work showcased in local art exhibits.
This is not Jones’ first foray into “fire chasing” so to speak. A long-time technical professional in the cybersecurity industry, he built a career based on recognizing danger in a way that was brilliant but also needed to be stopped, while simultaneously helping provide people protection.
Jones has historically bootstrapped his photography business but is now available for freelance as well as image licensing.
